Trainee/Graduate Estimator

We are currently looking to hire a Trainee/Graduate Estimator, this vacancy could be suitable for someone seeking to either start or further develop a career in estimating.  For example, this could be a construction/surveying graduate, someone who already has had some estimating work experience and is seeking to further develop their skills within the construction industry or someone who is seeking to start a career in estimating.

Job Purpose

The job holder will fulfil the role of Trainee/Graduate Estimator within the Estimating Department of the Construction Division. This will involve assisting with the co-ordination of Tender returns and commercial control of all projects undertaken by the department.

Main Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assist in the preparation and submission of market competitive tenders in line with company guidelines.
  • Assist with obtaining materials and subcontractor quotations.
  • Assist with the preparation of take offs from drawings and documents.
  • Organise and keep on tracking market price of equipment, material and construction costs.
  • Review tender documentation in order to prepare accurate cost estimations.
  • Assist prepare handover documentation for successful projects and attend internal pre-start meetings if required.
  • Setting up project folders, creating job sheets and issuing same to in-house tradesmen and to sub-contractors.
  • Coordinate the submission of Risk Assessments and Method Statements to Clients prior to project start.
  • Assist in the commercial control of projects (e.g raising invoices, raising payments for sub-contractors).
  • Collect job sheets and check them for accuracy, prepare costs for invoicing to Client.
  • Assist with checking the accuracy of tradesmen time sheets and submitting them to Payroll.
  • Minute weekly department meetings and distribute notes.
  • Provide other administration support within the estimating department as required.
  • Undertake any other tasks/duties that may be reasonably requested by management.



  • Hold/be working toward/willing to undertake an HNC in Built Environment or other similar course acceptable to the company.
  • Standard Grade passes at level 3 or above (or another equivalent level qualification) in English, Mathematics and Business Management/Studies.


  • Bachelor Degree or higher national qualification in construction or surveying.
  • Drivers Licence.



  • Excellent keyboard and literacy skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
  • To be able to demonstrate excellent numerical and mathematical skills in order to calculate costs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to proactively identify and provide solutions to a wide range of problems.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and to participate fully as a team member and produce measurable results.
  • Well organised, motivated and enthusiastic, coupled with ability to work on own initiative with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to produce high quality work whilst working to deadlines.
  • Good attention to detail and also good self-checking skills.
  • Be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.


  • Experience within the Construction Industry advantageous.
  • Experience of estimating software e.g. Causeway (full training will be given)
  • Ability to learn new software.
  • Administration experience.
  • Demonstrate some knowledge of budget control.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of local market price for cost of construction material, equipment and industrial process systems.
