CHAP Group embraces Mental Health First Aid

Friday, January 25th, 2019

In an effort to encourage our team to talk about, and help end, the stigma surrounding mental ill-health, CHAP Group are proud to have a Mental Health First Aider (MHFA) as part of our Employee Wellness Programme.

Sandra McRoberts, HR Manager at the CHAP Group is our nominated Mental Health First Aider. Her role isn’t intended to act as an alternative to professional medical advice but to act as a first point of contact or a ‘friendly ear’ in the workplace. All employees of the CHAP Group can approach Sandra in a strictly confidential manner – either for themselves or if they are concerned about a colleague. We believe having a Mental Health First Aider is a proactive approach to dealing with mental health issues in the workplace.

A mental health first aider can offer mental health first aid to anyone who may be in need of emotional support for any reason. This support isn’t just limited to problems experienced at work; we are all human and sometimes it can be hard to leave our worries at home.

Sandra said of her training: “Having previously trained as a volunteer counsellor outside work, I felt I had the skills and background awareness to enable me to support my colleagues and help raise awareness at work of mental ill health. As the company were keen to provide a Mental Health First Aid service to our employees I therefore undertook the MHFA course. After all we have first aiders for physical accidents or illnesses, why not have the same first aid for mental ill health? The construction industry is renowned for being a very male-dominated environment where it’s not the norm to speak about our feelings therefore it’s important that all employees of the CHAP Group feel supported in every way possible.”
