This £1.8m project was to extend SSE’s existing Carradale Substation on the Kintyre peninsula.
Poor ground conditions led to extensive earthworks and drainage works. Works also included the construction of a new switchroom building complete with reinforced concrete underbuilding. Temporary sheet piling was required to complete the construction of the concrete basement. Numerous concrete bases of varying size were cast and extensive trackwork completed for earthing and cable runs.
The remoteness of the site called for a higher than customary requirement for detailed planning and forecasting. The use of the company’s RB tracked crane proved to be of enormous value during the construction. The site personnel were almost all housed in temporary accommodation in Carradale.
